Part of A470 closed for nine hours after crash

Emergency services were at the scene of what appeared to be a serious crash on the A470 just outside of Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday night. Both Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon fire service confirmed their attendance at the collision which appears to have happened at around 10.30pm on Tuesday, February 27.

Describing the location of the incident, INRIX traffic monitoring system said: "A470 in both directions closed due to accident from A465 Heads Of The Valleys Road (Cefn Coed Roundabout, Merthyr Tydfil) to A40 (Tarrell Roundabout, Brecon). Traffic is coping well."

In a social media post detailing the crash, Dyfed-Powys Police said: "The road is currently closed due to a collision. Please avoid the area and find alternative routes for your journey. Thank you." At around 4am they added in response to a comment that the road would "remain closed for some time yet".

At around midnight Brecon Fire Service also shared: "Crews are currently on scene at a road traffic collision on the A470 near Storey Arms. It’s likely this part of the road will be closed for a long duration, so please seek an alternative route."

The road is expected to be busy on Wednesday as thousands of farmers head to Cardiff to take part in a protest over a number of issues threatening the industry. Organisers estimate 10,000 to 15,000 people could attend, which would likely make it the largest protest event in the Senedd's history. Follow our live updates of the protest here.

Traffic systems showed the road re-opened at around 8am on Wednesday morning.
