Pape Souare completes Motherwell transfer as former Lille and Crystal Palace star signs 6 month deal

Motherwell have swooped to sign former Lille and Crystal Palace left back Pape Souare. The Senegal international has penned a six-month-deal at Fir Park after leaving Morecambe and becomes Stuart Kettlewell’s fourth signing of the summer.

Souare broke through at Lille and was a member of their Ligue 1 winning squad in 2011 before sealing a £3.5m move to Palace three years later. The 33-year-old made 63 appearances for Palace but lost a year of his career in London after being involved in a horrific car crash on the M4 which saw him airlifted to hospital with thigh and jawbone injuries.

A spell back in France with Troyes followed before Souare returned to England with Charlton and Morecambe, making seven appearances for Derek Adams’ side last season after signing a short term deal in March. Now he’ll vie with Nathan McGinley and Ewan Wilson for the left-back spot at Fir Park after Kettlewell was convinced to make his move.

Souare has won 22 caps for Senegal and could go straight into the Motherwell squad for tomorrow’s Viaplay Cup clash against Queen of the South in Dumfries should the transfer be given international clearance. Kettlewell said: “It just gives us another option in one area of the park and another good addition to the group.

“I would like to add one or two to wide positions and forward positions, but what I can do will depend on a number of factors. We’re always working towards having those two options in every area of the pitch. But they have to be the right character to fit in with the squad and offer us something. We won’t bring in players just for the sake of it.”
