Oxford United finalise transfer swoop for experienced free agent

Oxford United have completed the signing of Sam Baldock on a deal until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old had spent the first part of the campaign with Derby County, after Wayne Rooney picked the forward up on a short-term contract.

However, his time at Pride Park wasn’t extended, so Baldock has been on the lookout for a new club for the past few weeks after it was confirmed he would leave.

And, he has now found a new club, with the U’s announcing the arrival of the former Reading man on a contract until May this afternoon. Baldock’s signing will give Karl Robinson another attacking option as his side look to push for promotion to the Championship.

A draw with high-flying Wigan has left the side sixth in the table, although such is the tight nature of the division, Oxford are likely to have eyes on the top two and the chasing pack outside the play-off places.

The striker is ready to play and is expected to be involved against Portsmouth tomorrow night.

The verdict

This seems like a sensible short-term move for Oxford because whilst they aren’t desperate for new players, they now have more depth for the run-in.

For Baldock, it’s the chance to get back playing football and he will surely be delighted for the opportunity to join a club that are pushing for promotion.

So, it’s a good move for all parties and it’s now down to Baldock to try and force his way into the XI and to make an impact, starting against Pompey tomorrow.
