Ospreys 27-28 Lions: Toby Booth's side throw away victory late on despite Keelan Giles' double

A late try from Edwill Van Der Merwe consigned the Ospreys to a disappointing defeat at home to the Lions.

Two tries from Keelan Giles and further scores from Rhys Webb and Dewi Lake had seen Toby Booth's side lead for much of the evening in Swansea, only for Van Der Merwe's score eight minutes from time to deny them a first United Rugby Championship win of the season.

The Lions took an early lead after Gianni Lombard punished the Ospreys from the tee after the home side were penalised at the scrum.

However, a brace of tries from Giles would put the Ospreys firmly in front. The first came from a quick tap penalty, with rapid hands - although the final pass from Luke Morgan did appear to stray forward - combining to put the wing over out wide.

His second was the result of the lively Jack Walsh making a half-break and getting his hands free to put Giles in space. From there, he had the pace to round a last-ditch tackle and score.

A poor exit handed the Lions the chance of a instant response after the Ospreys' second score. Gifted an attacking lineout, the visitors rumbled over the line with Francke Horn scoring.

The Ospreys forged further ahead after some lovely interplay between Max Nagy, Giles and Michael Collins laid the foundations for Webb to burst over from close range.

But the Lions would reduce the deficit to just six points at the break after another penalty from Lombard.

The second-half saw the Lions temporarily reduced to 14 men after Sibusiso Sangweni was sin-binned for a dangerous tip-tackle on Collins, but it would be the numerically-disadvantaged visitors who would score next.
