Opinion: Formation change could kickstart faltering Celtic

Celtic might be top of the league going into tonight’s game against St Mirren, but Ange Postecoglou’s side have not been playing well in recent weeks. 

The Hoops didn’t play well in the recent wins against Aberdeen and Dundee, and were poor in the recent goalless draw against Hibernian.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the game against Hibernian was the lack of chances created by Celtic in the game. Celtic rarely threatened the Easter Road side, and a draw was probably the fair result.

The Hoops boss will want his side to improve their performances ahead of a big week, with games against St Mirren and Livingston on the horizon. Six points from those two games would put Celtic in a good position when it comes to the Premiership title race.

For Celtic to get the two wins, the Hoops boss might have to make a change in his formation. The 4-3-3 that has been deployed for much for the season doesn’t seem to working as fluently as it once did.

Perhaps a change to a 3-5-2 or 4-3-1-2 could be a good idea. That would allow the Celtic manager to keep defensively solid, whilst not taking anything away from the attacking side of the game.

It could also get the best out of some players whose form has been up and down recently. Tom Rogic and Callum McGregor’s form has swung from excellent to poor and vice versa in recent games, with both players poor in the game at Easter Road.

Rogic or McGregor could thrive in a role behind the strikers if the Hoops end up playing the 4-3-1-2 formation, and each player could also be integral to any 3-5-2 formation, as they could take turns getting forward to support the main strikers when the moment was right.
