'One of the most talented young players in Europe' - expert Amadou Onana verdict amid Man United links

Manchester United got their campaign off to a winning start, just about, but the joy of the three points was tempered by the poor performance.

United were flat, disjointed and repeatedly exposed by a Wolves side that was supposed to be in turmoil after changing managers five days before the game. If it wasn't for lacklustre finishing, the saves of Andre Onana and the decisions of the officials, it likely would have been a very different result.

But the one benefit is you learn more from a poor display than a good one and the lesson to be taken away is that United need more reinforcements in the transfer window. Especially in defensive midfield, an area the Reds have considered strengthening all summer but so far haven't.

New signings are dependent on sales and with Harry Maguire's proposed move to West Ham falling through and Dean Henderson also staying, they haven't managed to raise much capital other than selling Fred for an initial £8million. Still, the way in which Wolves cut through United and how Casemiro was left exposed does suggest they could do with signing one before deadline day.

One potential target is Everton's Amadou Onana, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford. The 22-year-old had a strong debut season in the Premier League despite his club's struggles and came in for plenty of praise.
