Government confirms there will be no extra bank holiday for England's Lionesses' World Cup victory

The government has confirmed that England supporters won't be able to enjoy a day off if the Lionesses win the World Cup.

It comes after Sarina Wiegman's side beat co-hosts Australia in Sydney 3-1 on Wednesday. Their final match against Spain will take place on Sunday which could see the Lionesses take home the world champion title.

Some fans have called for an extra Bank Holiday if the Lionesses are victorious, the Mirror reports. This was even backed by Wiegman who said: "I would say yes, I can see all the English people here want it! But let's do everything to win the game tomorrow."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had a message for the side immediately after the success against Australia. Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "What a performance @Lionesses. Just one more game to go... Bring on Sunday."

Despite the PM's support however, the government has put a damper on any hopes of a Bank Holiday. A spokesperson said: "We congratulate the Lionesses on their fantastic achievement in getting to the Women's World Cup final.
