One Manchester United player solved two problems on tour and could save the club millions

If you were tasked with creating a highlights reel from Mason Mount's first season at Manchester United it would not take you long to complete it.

After swapping Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford in a £55million deal last July, the midfielder's first season in M16 was plagued by injury issues, restricting him to just 20 appearances across all competitions.

He was signed from Chelsea to lower the average age of United's midfield and pick up the baton from Christian Eriksen as the club's first-choice No.8. As important as the Dane was in 2022/23, it was clear United needed younger legs in the engine room.

However, as a result of numerous injury problems, the first of which he encountered before the end of August, his first season at Old Trafford was a write-off. He made just 14 Premier League appearances, nine of which were via the bench.

The 25-year-old arrived at Old Trafford with an impressive track record for someone still relatively young, having won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. He had also made almost 200 appearances for Chelsea.

Having featured prominently in United's pre-season campaign this summer, starting four of their five friendlies, Mount will be hoping he can rack up a healthy number of appearances this season.

He did not have the distraction of international commitments over the summer, affording him the time to recharge the batteries, put last season's struggles behind him and wipe the slate clean ahead of attempting to kick-start his United career this term.
