Nottingham Forest star delivers transfer verdict as Reds eye play-offs

Midfielder Ryan Yates believes the work Nottingham Forest did in the January transfer window could turn out to be crucial in the context of their season.

The Reds are in with a chance of securing a top-six finish as they head into their final 10 games. And driving their charge up the table has been an indefatigable spirit.

Under Steve Cooper, Forest have shown a real never-say-die attitude. It has seen them rescue points late on in matches, as well as cope with any challenges thrown their way.

The manager has been integral to instilling that mentality. But Yates says getting the right blend of players has also been important, with January playing a big part in that.

Keinan Davis has really impressed since joining on loan from Aston Villa. Prior to suffering an ankle injury, Steve Cook, who made the switch on a free transfer from Bournemouth, had been integral to a fine run of form. Sam Surridge, too, has had a good impact following his deadline day move, while Reds fans are still waiting to get a glimpse of Richie Laryea and Jonathan Panzo. The quintet’s arrival followed on from some excellent signings made last summer, too.

“I don’t think you can put that spirit down to anything specifically. But recruiting the right players has helped,” Yates said.

“Look at Steve Cook, for example. He’s been absolutely faultless. As a person and as a player, on and off the pitch, he gives so much.

“He’s such a top guy. He’s just one of those people you can rely on.

“That’s credit to the recruitment staff upstairs, because it’s difficult, especially in January, to get those kinds of players in. To get a player of his quality in helps the team.
