'Not for me' - Rio Ferdinand gives worrying verdict on Manchester United transfer 'target'

Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand does not believe that Manchester United would gain anything by signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

The 21-year-old, who joined Everton from French side Lille last summer, is being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford ahead of the transfer window slamming shut in just over a fortnight's time. United are open to strengthening their squad before the bell and would like to recruit another midfielder.

It is felt that United would benefit from drafting in another defensive-midfielder to provide both cover and competition for Casemiro. The Brazilian, currently, is the club's only out-and-out defensive-midfielder.

Fiorentina ace Sofyan Amrabat has been identified as a target for the Reds and he is reportedly keen to seal a move to M16 before the window closes on September 1. However, reports elsewhere in recent weeks have claimed that United are keeping a watchful eye on Onana, who was a ray of light in a dark season for Everton last term.

The Belgian has made 36 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions so far and started Saturday's 1-0 opening day defeat to Fulham at Goodison Park. But despite his credentials, Ferdinand does not believe he is the type of player that United are in need of, saying that he is not the "destroyer" that his former club would benefit from, as well as comparing him with former Red Marouane Fellaini, who swapped Goodison for Old Trafford a decade ago.
