Gary Lineker makes VAR point after Nottingham Forest fury at refereeing calls vs Manchester United

Gary Lineker has suggested the two major decisions during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest could have gone either way - and that VAR would not have intervened regardless.

United fought back from two-goals down to record their second win of the season at Old Trafford, thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. Forest had raced into an early lead with goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Will Boly coming inside four minutes.

United managed to pull level within 10 minutes of the second-half and as they continued to push forward Joe Worrall was sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity when he brought down Fernandes close to goal. The United captain then netted his winner from the spot after Marcus Rashford was felled by Danilo in the box.

Such was the fury among the Forest staff that they had considered making a complaint to the PGMOL regarding referee Stuart Attwell's performance. PGMOL chief refereeing officer Howard Webb has made clear his desire to increase the threshold of VAR referrals in order to keep the video assistants from re-refereeing the game.

The term 'clear and obvious' has been used constantly to suggest only the biggest mistakes will be reviewed, with Lineker suggesting both calls could have gone either way. He said: “The same sort of thing, whatever way the ref went on the pitch with both of those decisions, VAR probably wouldn’t have changed them.”
