Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner election 2024 results

Voters across Northumbria have gone to the polls to choose their next Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).

People who live in North and South Tyneside, Sunderland, Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumberland were eligible to vote in the elections. Ahead of the election, the PCC for Northumbria was Labour's Kim McGuinness. Mrs McGuinness was not running again for the position as she was a candidate in the first ever North East Mayoral election.

The candidates who were standing in the Northumbria PCC election were John Christopher Appleby (Liberal Democrat), Susan Elizabeth Dungworth (Labour and Co-Op), Ros Munro (Conservative and Mustaque Rahman (Independent).

The police and crime commissioner has responsibility for governing police in Northumbria and holding its chief constable to account.

The vote took place as more than 2,500 council seats were up for grabs across 107 local authorities in England as part of the local elections 2024. Mayoral elections took place in East Midland, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, North East, South Yorkshire, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire, London and Salford.

PCC elections also took place in other parts of the UK including Cheshire, Cumbria, Staffordshire and Lancashire.

May's local elections are the last big electoral test for all the political parties before the general election, which is expected to take place later this year.

Polls closed for the Northumbria PCC election at 10pm on Thursday, May 2, with the count taking place on Friday.
