Nick Montgomery responds to Barry Robson seethe as Hibs role reversal sees David Marshall silence his critics

Nick Montgomery has seen David Marshall take a lot of stick but reckons this performance in Hibs' 2-0 win over Aberdeen silenced his critics and showed he is still a top-class keeper.

The former Scotland No. 1 rolled back the years with a man of the match display over Aberdeen, which saw him make a string of stops and save a penalty from Bojan Miovski. Marshall has had his ups and downs at Easter Road but Montgomery knows he was big in getting these three points against Aberdeen that were sealed by Dylan Vente and Will Fish’s goals.

Montgomery said: “We have to thank Davie Marshall, he is a top class goalkeeper, I said that when I came to the club and nothing has changed. He stood strong, had some big moments. I thought the penalty save summed up his performance. “You need a calm head at the back. It’s vitally important you have good characters in the team and you’re not going to get more experienced than David.

“He’s had a lot of stick in the past but he’s a top class goalkeeper and he showed that today. We also had chances we could have put away but 2-0, clean sheet, going into a tough period, I’m definitely happy with the result.”

Aberdeen boss Barry Robson claimed his team had been the better one but Montgomery reckons it was just a role reversal of the Viaplay Cup semi-final that Hibs lost. Hibs are now four unbeaten and have gone three wins on the bounce for the first time since February. They remain in fifth and two points off third.

Montgomery added: “He’s (Robson) probably disappointed they didn’t get anything out of the game. But on the reverse, if you remember the semi-final we were by far the better team and we lost 1-0!

“So I’d say they were good today, and I’ll say that it wasn’t our prettiest performance.
