Newcastle injury update: Callum Wilson's potential St. James' Park return

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is unlikely to return to action until May, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Wilson has spent the last three months on the sidelines with a calf injury and doesn’t appear likely to make his comeback for at least another few weeks.

Newcastle might have moved three points closer to securing their Premier League status with victory over Wolves on Friday, but it remains a frustrating time for Wilson.

The striker was enjoying a productive season in front of goal, scoring six times in his 16 top-flight outings, but he injured his calf early in the second half of the draw with Manchester United in late-December, which has kept him out of action for the Toon Army’s last 12 Premier League fixtures.

Football Insider reported last month that Wilson was targeting an April return, which could see him feature in the Magpies’ final five games.

However, Downie reckons that the best outcome for the ex-Bournemouth frontman is to play some part in their last couple of fixtures, which get underway next month.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think the best case scenario, from what I’m hearing, is he will maybe be involved in the last two or three games in the season, but by then they might be safe, so is there any need to do that? Are you better off just getting him into good shape for the start of next season?”

If Downie’s prediction is accurate, then Wilson won’t be seen back in the famous black and white until May.
