Newcastle: Eddie Howe could push 29-cap star into St James' Park exit

Newcastle’s interest in signing a goalkeeper has made Martin Dubravka‘s position at St James’ Park uncertain, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The 29-cap Slovakia international has been the Toon Army’s number one for the last four seasons but faces an anxious wait heading into the summer transfer window.

Since coming into the side in November, Dubravka has been a mainstay under Eddie Howe, playing every minute in the last 22 top-flight games.

During that period, Newcastle have improved significantly, rising from bottom of the table to ninth in the Premier League, with the goalkeeper keeping a notable seven clean sheets, one of which came in the victory over Norwich on Saturday.

However, with Newcastle set to sign a goalkeeper when the window reopens for business, the 33-year-old could slip down the pecking order next season.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s interesting, because it kind of begs the question, does Eddie Howe see Dubravka as his number one moving forward?

“He’s obviously played every game and he’s a very good goalkeeper, but the fact there was interest in [Dean] Henderson in January and the name of [Bernd] Leno has been mooted around makes you think, they have been looking at the goalkeeping situation, although whether that’s as a number one or number two, I’m unsure.”

Henderson was on Newcastle’s radar in January, although Manchester United weren’t willing to let him leave despite being one of three senior goalkeepers at the club, along with David De Gea and Tom Heaton.
