Newcastle 'facing competition' for £34m duo at St James' Park

Newcastle United are going to face a lot of competition if they want to sign Dwight McNeil and Maxwel Cornet, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Burnley duo have been linked to the Tyneside club, but Jones reckons half of the Premier League could be after the pair this summer.

According to 90min, Newcastle have enquired about signing both McNeil and Cornet from Burnley following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship.

Cornet is believed to have a £17.5m release clause in his contract, though it is not quite clear how much McNeil would cost.

Combined, the Englishman and the Ivorian have a value of around £34m based on a calculation by the CIES Football Observatory.

The latter was by far Burnley’s best attacker last season, scoring nine goals in 26 Premier League appearances, but it was not enough to keep them in the top flight in the end.

Discussing Newcastle’s interest in McNeil, Cornet and Burnley shot-stopper Nick Pope, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Nick Pope is a great goalkeeper right here, right now, and basically available.

“Cornet and McNeil, I think they’re going to have so much competition to sign those two. I think half the Premier League wants to sign them, to be honest.”

It certainly does look like Newcastle are going to face a lot of competition to sign both McNeil and Cornet this summer.

Last month, 90min named West Ham, Brighton, Everton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Fulham as clubs who are all interested in Cornet.

As for McNeil, the same outlet has stated that Tottenham, Everton, Brentford, West Ham and Fulham have all asked about signing the 22-year-old winger.
