Newcastle expected to move for 'incredible' star with 'staggering' price tag - journalist

Newcastle United will be expected to turn their attention to Bernd Leno and Nick Pope in their summer search for a new goalkeeper.

This is what the transfer journalist Dean Jones has told This Is Futbol, with reports of the Toon now pulling out of the running for Dean Henderson.

It is believed the Magpies are no longer in the running for the Manchester United goalkeeper despite the 25-year-old being in search of a move away from Old Trafford.

The report from The Telegraph does suggest attention has now been placed on bringing in outfield players before addressing their goalkeeping situation.

However, Jones does believe the Magpies will have their eyes on alternatives for Henderson already with the two 30-year-old shot-stoppers being real possibilities.

He said: “If that’s [Henderson reports] the case, then Newcastle were already looking at Bernd Leno at Arsenal. And if they’re not going to go for Bernd Leno, then I think we should probably expect them to go for Nick Pope.

“They’ll want to be in that conversation as they weigh up new goalkeeping options if they’re not going ahead with Henderson.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We are interested to see who Newcastle do eventually bring in between the sticks this summer with Martin Dubravka’s spot coming under serious threat, according to reports.

And it would seem the Toon could now turn their attention to Pope, who has been described as ‘incredible’ by Jamie Redknapp but has a ‘staggering’ price tag of £40 million slapped on him.

Leno has fallen out of favour at Arsenal and Burnley have fallen out of the top-flight, so it is certainly not difficult to imagine the Toon being able to land either of these two potential targets.
