Newcastle: Eddie Howe makes new striker 'top priority' at St James' Park

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has prioritised welcoming a new striker to St James’ Park ahead of the upcoming season, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Having splashed the cash on Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Matt Targett since the summer window opened for business, it now appears as though Howe wants to add reinforcements in the attacking third of the pitch.

According to the Mirror, Newcastle are among a number of Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Brentford frontman Ivan Toney.

The report suggests Manchester United, West Ham United and Leeds United are also showing an interest in the 26-year-old, who made four appearances during a previous spell on Tyneside.

Newcastle are currently involved in a three-way tussle with West Ham and Everton for Chelsea’s Armando Broja as well.

However, doubts have been raised over whether Broja will be leaving Stamford Bridge as Blues head coach Thomas Tuchel has suggested it would come as a shock if he were to depart.

Italian newspaper L’Eco Di Bergamo, via TEAMtalk, have claimed Newcastle are back in the hunt to sign Atalanta star Duvan Zapata.

Romano believes Newcastle have set their sights on adding a new striker to their ranks as the 2022/23 campaign nears.

The transfer guru understands the Magpies are keen to follow up the astute signing of Botman by luring another exciting name to St James’ Park.

Romano told GIVEMESPORT: “I think signing a striker is the priority for them right now.

“After Sven Botman – who has been a top deal in defence – the priority will be for a striker, but they want to find the right one.”

Callum Wilson, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle are the only strikers currently on the club’s books, but there are question marks over all three of them.
