Newcastle: Fabrizio Romano hints at 'three new signings' at St James' Park

Newcastle United could move for ‘two or three targets’ in what remains of the current transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Magpies have so far been frustrated in their attempts to bolster Eddie Howe’s attacking options, but it seems they haven’t given up hope of making further signings ahead of September’s deadline.

Howe prioritised improving his defence in the early stages of the summer, bringing in goalkeeper Nick Pope, centre-back Sven Botman and left-back Matt Targett.

However, their lengthy pursuit of Hugo Ekitike ended in disappointment after the teenager opted to join Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain instead.

Yet Howe revealed in a recent interview that he remains ‘desperate’ to bolster his options in the final third of the pitch.

“Never say never,” the 44-year-old tactician replied when asked if a forward would sign during the coming weeks. “I’ve been in the game long enough to not give you a definite answer on that.

“As the days tick by, it seems more and more unlikely. But we are trying, as we have been all window. We’re desperate to try and improve the group if we can, with the right player.”

Newcastle became the richest football club in the world last year following their Saudi-backed takeover but are determined to stay within the limits of Financial Fair Play.

Romano has informed GiveMeSport that the North East outfit could still sign up to three further players, though, potentially depending on outings.

He told GMS: “I can see Newcastle moving on two or three targets. It depends also in this case on the outgoings, but they will be in for a striker and a creative midfielder.”

A recent report from The Guardian revealed that Newcastle have seen a second bid rejected by Leicester City
