New Derby County boss reveals surprise 'close' influence as he plots Rams success

Derby County interim manager Liam Rosenior says he has been 'absolutely enjoying' his journey as a coach - and revealed someone 'close' who has been influential in his development.

Rosenior took over last month after Wayne Rooney left, hours before David Clowes announced his intention to purchase the administration-hit club. The 38-year-old had first arrived at Pride Park in 2019, working under Dutch manager Philip Cocu.

And as Rosenior now prepares to take on the big challenge of guiding the Rams in League One, he is taking advice from an unexpected source.

He explained: "Myself and Wayne [Rooney] speak nearly every day. I'm really close to him, he has been really helping in my development as a coach in terms of management."

With more signings set to walk through the door at Pride Park before the start of the new season, new owners have shown their full support for Rosenior, who told BBC Radio Derby. "I'm so privileged to be part of this football club in this role and will do it until I'm told otherwise.

"Above all, I love being here and am committed to trying to make this club as successful as possible. For me, I'm absolutely enjoying it."

The Rams are unbeaten in their first two pre-season friendlies against Bradford City and Hertha Berlin, and now take on Stevenage this evening (7.30pm kickoff).
