Netflix announces final season of The Crown as fans say they're 'emotionally not prepared'

Netflix has announced that the final season of The Crown will be coming to our screen soon but fans are not ready. The show, which portrays a fictionalised version of the real-life events surrounding the Royal Family, has been a hit since it first aired in 2016.

The Crown has run for five series and began with a young Princess Elizabeth marrying Prince Philip and Winston Churchill becoming prime minister for the second time. The last season followed the fallout of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's divorce.

The sixth series will be The Crown's last and Netflix has taken to Twitter to tease the final series. In a post, Netflix said: "After six seasons, seven years and three casts, @TheCrownNetflix comes to an end later this year. We’ll be back with more soon, but here’s a hint at what’s to come in our final season."

The post included a picture of a hymn book lying in a church. The front of the hymn book read: "Service of prayer and dedication following the marriage of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall."

Fans commenting on the announcement said they weren't prepared for the show to end. Tom (itstomgardiner) said: "I have loved every scene, minute and second of this show.

"I’m gutted to say goodbye. Emotionally not prepared. But also ready. All I will say - is I hope Peter Morgan really is considering that prequel so that we can see even more history from previous reigning monarchs."

Rajarshi Ghosh (@jeezoh96) agreed about the need for a prequel series. They said: "Can we now get the prequel show which was meant to cover the years between Victoria and Elizabeth?"
