Man 'seriously injured' in attack inside AO Arena after Chris Eubank Jr fight

A man was seriously injured after he was attacked inside the AO Arena in Manchester city centre shortly after the end of the boxing between Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith, police have revealed.

Greater Manchester Police said the man, who hasn't been named, was taken to hospital shortly after midnight on Sunday , where he remained on Monday for treatment.

The force said his injuries were not 'currently believed to be life-threatening'. An investigation has now been launched and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

GMP confirmed officers received reports a man had been attacked inside the Hunt's Bank venue.

In a statement, GMP said: "Shortly after midnight on Sunday, 3 September 2023, officers received reports that a man had been attacked inside the AO Arena on Hunt's Bank, Manchester, shortly after a boxing event that night.

"The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he currently remains. His injuries are not currently believed to be life-threatening.

"Officers are now appealing for any witnesses from around the time of the incident – approximately between midnight and 00.10am – to please come forward.

"Additionally, anyone with any mobile phone footage they consider relevant is asked to share this with officers.

"Information can be passed to police by calling 101, quoting log number 33 of 03/09/23. You can also report information at www.gmp.police.uk. Alternatively, information can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Eubank Jr, 33, beat Smith by technical knock-out in round 10 after the referee stopped the fight following two knock-downs.
