Nectarios Triantis lands unanimous Rangers penalty verdict as Nick Montgomery finds 'baffled' VAR allies

The Sportscene pundits are convinced that Rangers should not have been awarded a penalty for a foul on John Souttar from Hibs defender Nectarios Triantis.

The Easter Road defender attempted to head a corner away from danger under pressure from Light Blues' centre-back Souttar. Referee David Dickinson initially allowed play to continue but was sent to review the flashpoint by Andrew Dallas in the VAR room. After looking at the pitchside monitor, the man in the middle opted to awarded a penalty to Rangers.

James Tavernier would see his effort saved from 12-yards by David Marshall before Scott Wright lashed the rebound into the net. A second VAR check would prove to be a let off for Hibs with the team in Clydesdale House deciding the winger had encroached and that Wright's effort should be chalked off with Nick Montgomery expressing his frustration at the call after the full-time whistle.

But the Easter Road boss found a trio of allies in the BBC studio. James McFadden kick off the debate stating: "I don't think it's a penalty. First of all, Triantis is going for the header and he only has his eyes on the ball. John Souttar just doesn't get the leverage he is looking for." Former Rangers hero Neil McCann chimed in: "I don't think John Souttar is getting anywhere near it.

McFadden went on: "He isn't. I just think he (Triantis) gets up nice and early. You need to use your arms to jump and John Souttar just can't get the height. Look, it's a sore one for John Souttar, there is absolutely no doubt about it, but it's not a penalty for me."

Host Stephen Thompson even got in on the action. The former Ibrox striker said: "And for the referee to be invited to go to the monitor after it...I am with you. I'm baffled by it."
