Nani sends plea to Cristiano Ronaldo over Manchester United transfer wish

Former Manchester United winger Nani wants to see countryman Cristiano Ronaldo stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.

Ronaldo trained on Wednesday after Erik ten Hag criticised him and other teammates for leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle in Sunday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Rayo Vallecano.

The attacker - who missed the club’s tour due to family reasons - still wishes to leave United. He is unlikely to start against Brighton in this Sunday’s Premier League opener due to lack of fitness, having played just 45 minutes in pre-season.

During the trip to Australia, following their stop at Thailand, Nani featured against United for new club Melbourne Victory. The Portuguese attacker had only signed for the A-League side a few days prior but came on for the final moments of the 4-1 loss to his former club.

United won three and drew one of their friendlies during the pre-season tour and, speaking to ESPN, Nani cited this good form as a reason why Ronaldo should stay at the club.

“I would like to see him in Manchester for one more year. Why not? The team has been doing great in pre-season.” he said. “They have been preparing well. They will be much stronger this season, so let’s see [about Ronaldo].”

Speaking in July, Nani said: "I hope [he stays]. He’s an important player and a player who always makes a difference. I hope he’s in a good mood to help the club so hopefully [he’ll stay]."
