Murder investigation launched after man, 54, 'killed by XL Bully dog'

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was fatally injured by a dog, believed to be an XL Bully, in Sunderland. A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

On Tuesday (October 3) evening shortly before 6.55pm police received a report that a dog had injured a man outside of an address on Maple Terrace in Shiney Row. A man, 54, was taken to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries and despite the efforts of medical staff he died later that evening.

Officers arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm. He was then re-arrested on suspicion of murder following the death.

The dog was destroyed at the scene to "ensure the safety of the public", Northumbria Police said. The dog is believed to be an XL Bully breed although police said further assessment would be carried out to confirm this. A second dog, also believed to be an XL Bully breed, was also seized as a precaution.

The 54-year-old man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. Police enquiries into the incident are still ongoing and officers will remain in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones. This is an absolutely tragic incident, and we will continue to offer them support in any way that we can.
