Multiple crashes on M60 and M56 as heavy rain hits North West

Motorists travelling in the North West are urged to take extra care overnight, with heavy rain hitting the region. North West Motorway Police warned of "numerous" reports of collisions in the region.

Crashes have been reported on the M56 between J14 and J12; on the M56 between J3 and J2; and on the M60 between J8 and J9.

In a Twitter update at 11.11pm on Tuesday night, police said: "Its very wet out there at the moment... If you are out and about please drive to the conditions."

Traffic monitoring service MancTraffic added: "Lashing it down out there with a lot of deep puddles and some flooding hotspots filling up. Faster routes still prone to #aquaplanerisk too."

The Met Office has warned of a 95% chance of rain across the Greater Manchester area until at least 3am, dropping to 90% at 4am and finally 50% by 5am, before conditions improve in time for the morning commute.

Traffic information service Inrix reported a collision on the M62, saying in an update at midnight: "Two lanes closed due to accident on M62 Eastbound from J19 A6046 Middleton Road (Heywood) to J20 A627(M) J3 Rochdale."
