Jack Grealish the gamechanger as Gareth Southgate finally learns the power of attacking subs

It was only last September when Gareth Southgate was defending himself against criticism over his substitutions, but here in Munich his changes made all the difference.

Jack Grealish is surely in line to start against Italy on Saturday evening after making a decisive impact as a second-half substitute, as Southgate tossed aside his inherent caution.

Jarrod Bowen was also effective late on and Southgate's bold changes ultimately proved pivotal to the result and spared the England manager from further scrutiny.

His apparent reluctance to make substitutions has defined much of his reign and he was clearly irritated after last year’s World Cup qualifier in Poland when confronted over his failure to make any changes.

It obviously helps when you have a £100million player on the bench and Grealish’s introduction in the 72nd minute swung the momentum of the game in England’s favour.

The Manchester City star was a shimmering menace on the left, cutting inside and creating two chances which Harry Kane should have converted before his late penalty.

He was intent on attacking Germany’s defence, proving far more influential than Mason Mount who was chosen to start ahead of him yet endured a quiet evening.

Grealish is direct, naturally confident, creates chances and always seems to flourish on the bigger stage when the pressure is on.

Perhaps he had a point to prove after starting on the bench, a decision which surprised many of the travelling fans, and he provided the spark that England desperately needed.

With 17 touches, one key pass, one big chance created and an assist, the statistics back up his contribution which was full of positive attacking intent. It could even have been his best game for his country.
