Motherwell want to go as far as we can in Viaplay Cup, says captain
Motherwell captain Liam Kelly wants his side to win their Viaplay Cup group and go as far as they can in the competition.
Kelly and his team-mates are in pole position for progress from Group G, and a win over East Fife at Fir Park tomorrow will cement that, putting them through to the last 16 as one of the seeded teams.
The talented keeper says he and Motherwell as a squad are in a good place just now, and wants to keep that momentum going into their Premiership opener at Dundee on August 5.
He said: “We need to win to top the group, so that’s the plan, and the plan is to win every single game.
“Obviously we came up short against Queen of the South, but it’s the same mind-set, the same approach, to try and win the game, finish top the group, and take that momentum into the following week against Dundee.
“I think the objective for everybody outside the Old Firm is how far can you go in these competitions, so one stage at a time, it’s the group stages for us, but we’re in a really good position.
“We gave eight out of nine points, we’re trying to get 11 out of 12, so I think we thought before the group started that if we got that it would be ideal, that’s where you want to be.
“We’re on track to get that and we’re looking to get that, come Saturday.
“But we’ve got a really difficult game against East Fife on Saturday, who are playing really well at the moment, and doing really well in the group.”
Kelly added: “I feel we’re in a good place. The manager has built up a lot of momentum, put in his ideas and they’ve proven that they’ve worked.
“Since he’s come in we’ve done really well, and just trying to keep that going, keeping the same sort of principles that he’s put in place for us.
