Michael Hector on lingering Aberdeen FC transfer regret as Charlton star prepares for Barry Robson reunion

Michael Hector has insisted his time at Aberdeen was far too short and compounded by the fact he missed out on a League Cup winner’s medal.

The former Dons loanee will face up to his old team when they make the trip to the Valley for Saturday’s friendly with Charlton Athletic. The issue was that he was recalled by Reading after six months and he missed out on a winner’s medal, as the Dons went on to beat Inverness and lift the 2014 League Cup. The Addicks defender admitted: “For my liking, it was too short. I wanted to play for the whole season but it was out of my hands.

“That was another thing I look back on because I would have loved to play in that (the League Cup final). I went to the final with my brother and my dad and it was a great day out for my family. The club was fantastic by inviting me to come.

“It was tough. I went into the changing room before the game to wish all the players the best. It was a great day out with all the fans that were there who obviously trumped the Inverness fans. It was a great day for the club and for me. I would have loved to have been on the pitch and played a part but it wasn’t to be.

“My family enjoyed it. My brother and my dad travelled together. I was happy Aberdeen won but it was disappointing to miss out on that game.”

The Jamaican international admitted his loan at Aberdeen from Reading back in 2013 helped launch his career. He was recalled in the January because of an injury crisis at the Royals and the fact he was stalling over a new deal. His return did go to plan right away but he eventually broke into the Reading squad and then won a dream move to Chelsea and then Fulham.
