Motherwell star says luck deserted them as St Mirren defeat ends Premiership run

Callum Slattery says luck wasn’t on Motherwell’s side and they did everything but score as St Mirren ran out 1-0 winners at Fir Park on Saturday.

Scott Tanser’s 54th-minute volley ended Motherwell’s unbeaten run in the Premiership at 10 games, and it’s a second slender win for the Paisley side this season, having ousted them from the Viaplay Cup last-16 in August.

Midfielder Slattery reckons Motherwell were by far the better team, but just couldn’t put the ball in the net.

Saints keeper Zach Hemming denied Blair Spittal’s volley, and did well to save his free kick after Marcus Fraser had decked Brodie Spencer just outside the box.

Theo Bair sent an angled shot inches past the left post in 30 minutes, and Harry Paton let fly with a shot that flew past the left top corner shortly before St Mirren’s winner.

Callum Slattery had a free kick well saved, Bevis Mugabi had a shot deflected wide, and Oli Shaw mis-hit a shot right in front of Hemming, giving him an easy save.

Sub Georgie Gent then struck the crossbar with a fierce shot, but Motherwell couldn’t make the break-through.

“I thought we were the better team but that doesn’t always win your games – it’s about being clinical in both boxes.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the ball in the back of their net, and they got it in the back of ours, so ultimately we’ve lost the game.

“We knew it was going to be a tight game, one goal between us, if that.
