Motherwell could have taken all three points from Killie, says goal hero

Callum Slattery’s brilliant free-kick snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat for Motherwell, and he reckons they could have taken all three points from Rugby Park.

The Lanarkshire side trailed to Scott Robinson’s early opener for Kilmarnock, after Motherwell failed to clear a Danny Armstrong corner.

But Slattery curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top right corner in the last minute to secure a 1-1 draw and deny the Ayrshire club a second home league win over Motherwell this season.

Kilmarnock had dominated the first half and took the lead in 17 minutes when Joe Wright’s header was well saved by Liam Kelly from Armstrong’s corner but the keeper could do nothing to prevent Robinson from blasting in.

Derek McInnes’ side dominated possession but didn’t do a lot with it and were given a warning when Blair Spittal had a shot blocked in first-half stoppage time.

Sam Walker kept Kilmarnock in the game in the second half, saving superbly from Jon Obika, Kevin van Veen and Paul McGinn, before Slattery levelled with just minutes remaining.

There were some flurries inside stoppage-time as Motherwell tried to make their momentum carry them through, and sub Stephen O’Donnell had a shot blocked, but a draw was probably a fair result.

Slattery, 24, was delighted with his free-kick but more so that it earned a point from a difficult venue.

The English midfielder said: “I think we merited a point, if not three – we could have maybe pinched a winner towards the end.

“We had plenty of chances in the second half so it was just good to come home with a point.
