Motherwell AC ace eyes Euro glory after double gold success

Motherwell Athletics Club ace Alan Robertson hopes two gold medals at the British Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships can launch him to European Championship success next year.

Robertson, 47, from Airdrie, won gold in 100m and 200m at the Masters event at Moorfields Stadium in Derby in July, recording his fastest times of the season, and scoring a one-two that he hasn’t done before.

The veteran athlete will shortly go into winter training, which he hopes puts him in the best condition possible to tackle the major event in Madeira, Portugal, in October 2025.

Robertson said: “I was over the moon with the gold medals.

“I’ve been through there a few times over the past eight years or something like that, and I’ve got some medals there before, but never managed to win the 100m and 200m, so that’s a first.

“It’s the first time I’ve done the double down there, so it was really good, and a proud moment.

“My wife, my mum and my brother, and my brother’s kids were there and got to see it, so it was good to get the win for them to see as well.

“The times would have been even better, had we not been running into a headwind, so it would have been interesting to see.

“Almost every year I go to the Scottish Championships and try to get to some bigger events.

“I’ve been to a few Europeans and a few British Championships. Last year I got a silver in the 200m at the European Championships, which was the first time I had got on the podium as a single athlete at a big championships.

“Every year I have some kind of focus on a bigger event, and this year it was the British.”

The European Masters Athletics Stadia Championships take place in Portugal from October 8 to 19 next year, and Robertson intends to give himself the best chance
