Gordon Reid celebrates 'Golden Slam' after Paris Paralympic doubles gold

Helensburgh’s Gordon Reid was overcome with emotion after securing a ‘Golden Slam’ with victory in Paris.

Vale-born Gordon and partner Alfie Hewett brushed aside Japan’s Tokito Oda and Takuya Miki 6-2 6-1 to spark special scenes on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Three years after losing in a wheelchair tennis men’s doubles final that went the distance in Tokyo, the British duo have completed the career Golden Slam in men’s wheelchair doubles – becoming the first partnership in history to do so.

It is also now 1,915 days since the kings of clay were beaten in Paris.

“We finally did it,” said an emotional Gordon. “Sometimes you need to feel some pain to enjoy the highs, and we need to really savour this moment.

“We’ve come close twice and felt that heartbreak and pain. Those matches have been some of the toughest moments of my career, so to sit here with the gold around our necks is one of the best feelings I’ve had in sport.

“It feels amazing, even if it’s not fully sunk in yet.”

The scoreline may have looked comfortable but it took nearly an hour to wrap up the first set.

However, the second set saw the Brits in total control, with the medal being Gordon’s fifth at the Paralympics having defeated Alfie for gold in the singles competition in 2016.

The 32-year-old is also the first ParalympicsGB player to win a wheelchair tennis gold medal in both singles and doubles.

“For me and Gio, we’ve been wanting this title for a long while and right now enjoying this moment and celebrating what we’ve done is all that matters,” Hewett added.
