More than 50 drivers spotted breaking law in hours on major Greater Manchester road

Police stopped over 50 vehicles driving along Bury New Road in one day after vowing to crack down on illegal behaviour in the area.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police's traffic division arrested two drivers and witnessed over 50 offences being committed by motorists in the area.

Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs along the stretch of road on Friday afternoon (March 3).

Police pulled over dozens of other drivers for offences including 20 for not wearing a seatbelt and 14 for using a mobile phone at the wheel.

In an update on Twitter, the force said: "Officers from GMP traffic arrested two drivers on suspicion driving under the influence of drinks/drugs on Bury New Road yesterday.

"More than 50 offences were committed including 20 for not wearing a seatbelt and 14 for using a mobile phone."

Police in the area have promised to crackdown on crime in the area, particularly focusing their efforts on illegal traders selling counterfeit goods.

Last week, police revealed 20 tonnes of fake items - including 'hundreds' of illegal vapes, were seized in raids on 'some of the last remaining shops' selling goods.

A detective said just 'a few' units were now continuing to trade in the Cheetham Hill and Strangeways areas - and vowed: "We will be targeting these premises imminently and as the shops start to disappear, we will be targeting those higher up the chain who for so long have felt above the law and out of reach."

In a statement issued last week, Greater Manchester Police said Operation Vulcan was drawing ever closer to bringing about the end of 'Counterfeit Street'.
