Missing Jay Slater 'was not here', Tenerife town's mayor says after CCTV released

The Mayor of the town in Tenerife where Jay Slater was potentially sighted on CCTV cameras has said he does not believe the missing teen ever made it there. A grainy CCTV image showed a figure walking past a church in from Santiago del Tiede - around four miles from where Jay was last seen - at around 6pm last Monday.

But Mayor Mayor Emilio Navarro said: "He's not here."

Speaking to the Independent, he added: "The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras. We could not give it to them as they are organised through a separate company, so the police are speaking to them.

"But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place - I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede and he is not here. We will help the police but it makes no sense. We have had family and journalists here but we have seen no police."

Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared while attempting to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus. The apprentice bricklayer had been partying at the NRG music festival on the island with two pals before his disappearance and was last heard from on Monday last week.

As the desperate search for the teenager enters its 11th day, the Civil Guard are are focussing their efforts to the north of the Masca Gorge. Three separate ravines – including one where it is believed Jay's phone last 'pinged' shortly after he disappeared are also being searched.

Mountain rescue teams, local police, the Civil Guard and fire crews have been scouring the vast landscape, with sniffer dogs, drones and helicopters used in the search.
