Met Office's Storm Darragh tracker maps shows where and when 'violent' winds will hit

Greater Manchester, like the rest of the UK, is set to be battered by Storm Darragh today. The storm has already seen heavy rain and strong winds sweep across the country overnight and conditions could get worse throughout the day.

A rare Met Office red weather warning for wind and a government 'threat to life' warning has been issued for parts of Wales and the south west and came into force in the early hours of this morning (Saturday).

"Damaging winds" of up to 90mph have been forecast in some areas with millions of people urged to stay indoors for their own safety. The red warning is set to last until 11am.

A separate amber warning covering a larger stretch of the west coast of the UK, stretching from southern Scotland to Cornwall, and Northern Ireland is in place from 1am until 9pm. Greater Manchester is covered by a yellow weather warning for wind, which is in place until 6am on Sunday.

Here, wind speeds could reach almost 65mph at the height of the storm. The Beaufort wind force scale classes winds of more than 47mph as a 'strong gale' and above 55mph as a 'storm.' The Met Office says there is a 'slight chance' of damage to buildings, road closures and power cuts in our region.

"There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris," they say. They added: "There is likely to be longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected."
