Moving into the middle of next week, the forecast predicts conditions will become unsettled, with possible heavy rain and strong winds affecting all regions. Temperatures will likely drop to around or slightly below average later next week.
Following this period, generally mixed weather conditions are predicted with high pressure attempting to build across the southern part of the country at times. But the Met Office says it is unlikely to dominate, as wet and windy spells are expected to arrive from the west.
Temperatures are expected to fluctuate around average, with occasional milder and colder interludes. Any chances of snow this Christmas is most likely to occur in high-altitude areas, but it could temporarily fall at lower levels in the north during colder spells, the Met Office says.
