New Year's Day snow warning hits Greater Manchester as Met Office issues NINE alerts

Snow and fierce winds could hit Greater Manchester as 2025 gets off to an settled start. The Met Office has issued nine weather warnings across the UK from Monday, December 30, to Thursday, January 2.

Two of the warnings affect Greater Manchester on New Year's Day. A yellow warning for snow comes into force at 9am on Wednesday, January 1, and lasts until 3am on Thursday.

The warning covers much of the North, including northern and eastern areas of Greater Manchester, plus the city centre. The Met Office says: "Heavy and persistent snow may bring disruption on Wednesday and Wednesday night."

It adds: "A band of rain in association with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west pushes east on Wednesday. This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across the northern half of the UK.

"Two to five cm and locally nearer 10 cm of snow accumulations are possible widely, with 10-15 cm and locally 20-25 cm over hills with significant drifting due to strong winds." Meanwhile, a larger area of the England, Wales and southern Scotland is also covered by a yellow warning for wind on New Year's Day.

The warning runs from 9am on Wednesday to 6am on Thursday, with 'very strong winds' including gusts of up to 75 mph at coasts and hills, and up to 60 mph inland. The Met Office says there is a 'small chance of injuries and danger to life' as a result of debris or large waves on seafronts.

Snow and wind could also bring disruption to travel and power. The warnings are two of nine issued by the Met Office nationwide for the next week, with the following six yellow warnings also in force:
