Man wins £29m in lottery but is dead weeks later splashing out on teeth
A man who scooped a £26.5m jackpot in Brazil's largest lottery tragically died just weeks later, after spending some of his winnings on dental treatment. Antônio Lopes Siqueira, a cattle farmer from Mato Grosso, hit the jackpot earlier this year after purchasing a lottery ticket for just over 66p.
Following his windfall, he reportedly used part of his winnings to pay for dental treatment. However, during the procedure, he suffered a cardiac arrest that lasted 30 minutes until emergency services arrived.
They further stated that Mr Siqueira had both diabetes and high blood pressure at the time of his death, and despite resuscitation attempts, he was declared dead. In a statement, local police chief Edison Pick said the cause of death had not yet been determined, but investigations were ongoing.
He said: "It has not yet been determined whether the cause of death was natural or induced. If it was a sudden illness, the clinic will not be held responsible. We are waiting for the results of the autopsy to clarify the facts."
The news of Mr Siqueira's death so soon after his lottery win has shocked the local community, with one local telling the press: "He was a simple person; no one expected something like this to happen to him, much less that it would end so quickly."
Another individual, Yesser Dahrouge, told Matto Grosso: "It's very sad; everyone dreams of winning such an amount of money. It's a shame he couldn't enjoy it."
Following his passing, Mr Siqueira was laid to rest in Jaciara, approximately 88.75m (142km) from his birthplace of Ciuabá. The lottery that Mr Siqueira participated in is known as the Mega-Sena lottery, Brazil's biggest lottery, where a winner is determined by picking six numbers.
