Max Johnston watched by Cardiff City as Motherwell see Championship interest in top talent heat up

Cardiff City watched Motherwell’s Max Johnston in Sunday's win over Hearts.

The right-back has already had plenty of strong scouting interest from the the English Championship, with Sheffield United, Luton Town and Preston all on the Scotland youth international's case. Johnston is going into the final four months of his deal in North Lanarkshire and Bluebirds talent spotter Alex Stafford was at the match to take a glance over the teenager, who was impressive in the 2-0 Premiership success.

Cardiff signed Jak Alnwick from St Mirren in the summer and suitors south of the border are in the knowledge that they could take Johnston for a slimmed-down cross-border fee. He has emerged as a key player for Motherwell since returning from his loan at Cove Rangers and sealed three midweek points against St Mirren with a wonder strike. The full-back has previously had a successful loan with Queen of the South before heading to Balmoral in the first half of this season.

There is currently a state of uncertainty at Fir Park. They are without a permanent manager - although Stuart Kettlewell is believed to be favourite for the job - while a new chief executive is needed as Alan Burrows prepares to depart for Aberdeen.
