Representing Liverpool and Celtic stars was great, but Motherwell No.2 role was too good to turn down

Stephen Frail used to represent Liverpool and Celtic superstars, but still jumped at the chance to become Motherwell assistant manager.

Frail says the lure of coaching was too strong to resist, having been doing that for 21 years since packing in his playing career.

The 53-year-old was director of football at PLG player agency, who represent Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold in England and stars like David Turnbull and Greg Taylor in Scotland.

But former Dundee, Hearts and Tranmere star Frail said there was no hesitation when he received the call from Stuart Kettlewell.

“I jumped at it,” he said. “I was in a good job, really rewarding, but the opportunity to get back in and work in coaching is just something I’ve done since I finished playing in 2002.

“I was working with PLG, alongside Liam O’Donnell in Scotland. PLG represents players like Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor, Chris Cadden, Grant Hanley, Stuart Armstrong and Ryan Christie.

“It was a good company with big players. I was tasked with coming in as their director of football, looking at trying to bring in the next young players who could facilitate the company continuing to build and grow.

“It was an easy one, made even easier by the position that they’re in, in the top league in Scotland, and with a young manager who has ambitions to be as good as he possibly can be.”

Frail admits he was surprised to get a call from Kettlewell, but is delighted that the former Ross County gaffer reached out to him.

“It was a very informal chat,” he explained. “I accepted the position, and I’m delighted to be in, working at a fantastic football club, with an exciting young manager.
