Matty Cash speaks out on 'really bad' Aston Villa performance against Newcastle United

Matty Cash admits he is "really disappointed" with Aston Villa's performance against Newcastle United after Steven Gerrard's side were defeated 1-0 at St. James' Park.

Kieran Tripper's free kick opened the scoring in the first half and without reply from Villa, it condemned Gerrard's men to a fourth league defeat in their last eight games.

Ollie Watkins had the ball in the back of the net on the hour mark but his tap-in was ruled out for offside.

Villa remain winless at Newcastle since 2005 and will host Watford this coming Saturday in hope of getting back to winning ways in the Premier League.

But Cash thinks Villa must step up their level of performance to avoid another poor showing next weekend.

“Very disappointed, really,” he told VillaTV after defeat to the Magpies.

“I thought first half we were really bad, second half we came out and played a little bit better football, but we didn’t really do much.

“Really disappointed. It’s back to the drawing board and working hard this week to try and put things right next week.”

Asked what he felt was missing from the performance on Tyneside, Cash replied: “I don’t know, really.

“We prepared the same, we prepared really well.

“It’s just tough to take, it’s obviously a tough place to come but we need to be better as a team.

“As I say, we’ve got to put that behind us now and we’ve got a big week to get ready for a massive game next weekend.”
