Matthew Twomey ends Cork camogie tenure in wake of All-Ireland win

Matthew Twomey has brought the curtain down on his tenure as Cork senior camogie manager, just a month after guiding the county to All-Ireland glory.

The Douglas club man reportedly informed the county board of his decision not to seek a further year in charge on Monday night.

Twomey was appointed Cork manager in November 2021 on a two-year term, succeeding four-time All-Ireland winning boss Paudie Murray.

With former All-Ireland winning hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald as part of his backroom team for the first year in charge, Cork reached both the league and All-Ireland finals in 2022 but lost to Galway and Kilkenny respectively in those deciders, the latter by a point.

They also tasted defeat in this year's league final, losing to Galway again by four points.

But they brought that run of final heartbreak to an end by winning the All-Ireland decider against Waterford in dominant fashion on 6 August, Amy O'Connor scoring a sensational hat-trick of goals in a 5-13 to 0-09 triumph at Croke Park.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after watching his side lift the O'Duffy Cup for the first time in five years, Twomey said past heartache had driven Cork to greater heights in 2023.

"We bottled [the heartbreak], we bottled a lot of it. It was tough last year losing it and losing a league final again and we got a lot of criticism," he said.

"But we just kept it between our four walls. We bottled it and there was no way we were going to leave it down today."
