Matteo Darmian makes Manchester United admission ahead of Man City Champions League final

Matteo Darmian admits the Champions League final is extra special for him because of his spell playing for Manchester United - and he's promised to give it his all to stop Manchester City winning the treble.

Darmian spent four years at Old Trafford before leaving for Parma in 2019, but he switched to Inter Milan a year later and is now set to start against City in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

The Italian made just 92 appearances for United and rarely looked like establishing himself as a long-term first-team starter, but he has bounced back at the San Siro for Inter.

Darmian never quite became a fan favourite at Old Trafford, but he will carry the support of United fans in Saturday's final, with City one game away from matching their treble of 1999.

"It will be a special match, it’s a Champions League final and I have played for Man United so it will be a special match for me," he said. "We will do our best for us, for the club, for the fans, we will give it our very best shout to win this extremely important trophy.

"I played Manchester City several times, we are all very much aware of their qualities, they have great team play, and individual qualities, we must be very careful and do our best to give them problems."

Inter are underdogs in the final, with City steamrollering Bayern Munich and Real Madrid on their way to the final, but Darmian is confident his team can pose Pep Guardiola's side some problems of their own.

"We know what a strong side Manchester City is, we know it’s going to be a very tough match, we will go onto the field knowing we’re a strong team and we can cause them trouble," he added.
