Matt O'Riley has every club in the bag.
And his old coach Peter Grant says it’s par for the course the champions are teeing-up a new deal for his former pupil. O’Riley’s outstanding work over 19 months since moving from MK Dons has put him in line for an extended and improved contract.
The 22-year-old burst onto the scene under Ange Postecoglou and is maintaining his thrilling progression working with Brendan Rodgers. On the day O’Riley signed for Celtic, ex-Celt Grant gave Record Sport a detailed insight into the midfielder. Having put the player into his Fulham under-18 squad at the age of just 15 during his spell as the club’s Lead Professional Development Coach, his words of admiration for the kid’s skills had already been backed up with deeds. Grant explained robustness in terms of matches and his work without the ball were the key elements which initially needed to be progressed.
O’Riley has completed all of the missions at Celtic. He played more matches for Postecoglou’s team last season in the Premiership last term than anyone else. And, having filled Callum McGregor’s position during the skipper’s injury absence last term and improving his defensive work thoroughly, he’s now the complete package. That was proven perfectly on his last outing eight days ago at Ibrox.
At one end, he set up Kyogo Furuhashi to score the winner against Rangers with an instinctive headed assist. At the other, O’Riley’s outstanding positional sense and defensive discipline saw him constantly snuff out attacks and protect his defence.
