Matt O'Riley Celtic hype hits new gear as Atletico masterclass has Spanish media predicting spot among the 'greats'
Matt O'Riley is on the fast track to greatness and nothing is going to stop the Celtic star hitting the very top now.
That's the view of the media across Europe after the Denmark midfielder ran the show against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. O'Riley has been one of the stars of the Brendan Rodgers era with six goals and four assists already this season - one coming against Atleti at Parkhead when he threaded one through the eye of the needle for Kyogo early on.
He was named Player of the Match by UEFA as Celtic drew 2-2 with the La Liga high-flyers and he's caught plenty of attention. The Spanish media were in awe with ABC blown away by what they saw from the 22-year-old. Their write up of the game noted 'The young O'Riley's fine left foot will soon be at the service of a great' tipping him to go on and play for the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona one day.
Any club that wants to sign him though will need to front up mega cash - he only signed a new four-year contract with Celtic in September and is potentially their most valuable asset. Popular transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Thursday drawing attention to Celtic's 'gem' - noting any club who wants to sign him now will need to cough up a 'Scottish record transfer fee.' That would leave the £25m the Hoops landed for Jota in its wake.
O'Riley will be hoping his impressive form can help inspire Celtic to kick on in Europe - especially if the injury his midfield partner Reo Hatate picked up proves to be serious. Hatate went off straight after Kyogo's wonderful opener to be replaced by Paulo Bernardo after the game and Rodgers revealed afterwards it was a hamstring problem. He said it was "too early to say" whether it would be a quick fix.
