Matheus Cunha to Man United £62.5m transfer concern as Ruben Amorim told how to unleash new star

Matheus Cunha is the first signing of a huge summer at Manchester United.

Everyone knows how important recruitment will be at Old Trafford over the next few months as the Reds look to recover from their lowest-ever Premier League finish. The absence of European football at M16 will only make that task harder.

But the early signs are promising and optimism is building after United's swift start to the summer window. There is hope that Ruben Amorim's side can put a dismal campaign behind them and truly begin their rebuild under the former Sporting head coach.

One man who has followed Cunha's career closely in England is Wolves correspondent for the Express and Star, Liam Keen. He explains why United may have been so eager to wrap up a £62.5million deal for the Brazilian.

"Cunha is a supremely talented footballer," Keen said. "He arrived in the January of 2023 when Julen Lopetegui was just taking over and Wolves were struggling down the bottom, and obviously he was part of that that turnaround in keeping the club up at the time and he didn't do loads in the six months of the second half of that season, he was sort of settling in a little bit.

"Lopetegui was playing him as a number nine on occasions, and very clearly he wasn't a number nine. We saw his real breakthrough under Gary O'Neil in the following season, who quickly realised that Cunha is not a number nine. He's someone to play off the left more than anything, but to occupy those number 10 positions in and around the forward or the number nine, and as a footballer, he took his game to a whole new level.
