Martin Zubimendi can grab dream Manchester United shirt number amid Matthijs De Ligt dilemma

Manchester United are monitoring four midfielders, including Spain's Euro 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi, in their ongoing attempts to strengthen up the squad for next season. Manuel Ugarte, Adrien Rabiot and Sofyan Amrabat are the other players on radar for Erik ten Hag and INEOS behind the scenes.

Signing another forward and bolstering the defensive ranks were United's main priorities this summer. Key figures at Old Trafford have also been doing their research on midfielders, though, with Zubimendi seeing his stock rise on the back of a top campaign for Real Sociedad, which preceded Euro 2024 glory.

Arsenal and Barcelona are also thought to be considering a move the for 25-year-old. In that respect, United have their work cut out, but they are by no means out of the race.

On the proviso he does pitch up at Old Trafford this summer, Zubimendi has the perfect shirt number ready and waiting for him. The midfielder, who is not only technically gifted but possesses defensive qualities, too, has held the No.4 shirt at Sociedad over the last two seasons - previously wearing No.3 in San Sebastián.

As luck would have it, those two options are unassigned at United right now. However, with Matthijs de Ligt also donning those numbers for club and country, there could be an in-house conversation to be had.

For sentimental reasons, Zubimendi might also have his eyes on the No.18 shirt. He was assigned that number for Spain at Euro 2024 - and we unfortunately know how that ended - and it could be freed up at Old Trafford should former Real Madrid powerhouse Casemiro move on.
