Martin O'Neill sees Celtic anecdote about 'owning' club receive short shrift as he lands one on sparring partner

Martin O'Neill reckons the role of the all-encompassing manager should be embraced - as being handed full control of Celtic was 'the biggest compliment' he ever received.

But the legendary boss was miffed when he was immediately shot down by Simon Jordan, who believes the days of managers doing everything for the club have been and gone. O'Neill was a guest on talkSPORT on Monday morning and the discussion centred around Jurgen Klopp's bombshell announcement that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

The German is into his ninth year at Anfield but says he is 'running out of energy' - perhaps unsurprising after being Mr Liverpool for almost a decade. Klopp's brand of management is in many ways a throwback to O'Neill's era, a full-on manager rather than a head coach who has the final say on everything. And O'Neill, who won three league titles among seven major honours at Parkhead, reckons that when the board put that amount of faith in you, it's one of the biggest compliments you can get as a gaffer.

He said: "When I went into Celtic, the owner told me 'I want you to take ownership of this football club.' He didn't mean literally 'owning' the football club. Metaphorically speaking. 'This is your club to run.' That, to me, was the biggest compliment I could get..."

That's where outspoken Jordan cut in and offered his perspective from the other side of the coin. The former Crystal Palace owner said: "Here's the fascinating thing.
