Martin Dubravka lifts lid on Cristiano Ronaldo reaction after ex-Manchester United teammate kicked him in the head

Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to check on former Manchester United teammate Martin Dubravka after accidentally kicking the goalkeeper in the head while on international duty.

Dubravka came up against two former teammates in Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes on Friday evening, with the latter scoring the only goal as Portugal beat Slovakia 1-0. The United captain arrowed a lovely effort into the far corner after a slaloming run left him in space.

Ronaldo's best chance on goal wasn't as polished, his loose touch from close range bouncing towards Dubravka. The 38-year-old stretched out a leg to try and poke the ball home but ended up colliding with the Slovakian goalkeeper.

Ronaldo's studs caught Dubravka in the chest and face, with the former Reds striker earning a yellow card for his troubles. There was even a VAR check for a red card, however he escaped further punishment for what was clearly an accident.

"In the shoulder, the neck and the chest," Dubravka responded when asked about his injuries. "I just closed my eyes and prayed that he [Ronaldo] wouldn't hit me in the face as well. When I saw his studs coming at me, I didn't even look.

“These are situations when the goalkeeper closes his eyes and tries only to block the shot, and he, as a striker, has to go after such a ball. I don't blame him. It's sport, it's football. Situations like this belong to it.

“Of course, he realised he hit me. He asked me if I was OK. I take it sportingly. I try to keep a clear head in these situations. It is a contact sport. Today, when we have VAR at our disposal, there is no point in getting into it.”

Dubravka had time after the match to find Fernandes and share a nice moment
